Marlene Barker reports
The nationally ranked petanque doubles duo Alan Fletcher and Andre Noel from Rotorua triumphed at the hotly contested Parkwood Kāpiti Open Doubles, heading off local pair Annick Le Guen and Brett Maguire.
The recent Parkwood Kāpiti Open Doubles Petanque championship, held at the Kāpiti Petanque Club, saw outstanding competition throughout an amazing weekend. Parkwood Trust are now sponsors of this annual competition and we welcome their generosity. Kāpiti Club’s largest tournament attracts players from all over New Zealand.
This year 26 teams entered and their talent made it a real pleasure to watch. The rain decided to make its appearance during the first game, causing players to race in all directions to retrieve their raincoats. Luckily the rain cleared by the end of the game and the rest of the weekend was extremely hot and dry.
There were some really tough games, at times so close, with only one point making the difference. It was impressive to see those who did not reach the finals remain to give support to the finalists, despite how tired they must have been. The friendship between all players was evident.
Liz Koh, Kāpiti Petanque Club’s Patron, took time out of her busy life to present the awards
