The Lost King – found in Waikanae

Sally Hawkins, outstanding lead in The Lost King with co-star Harry Lloyd

Movie Review – The Lost King

The Lost King is an excellent feel-good movie, unless you are a representative of the University of Leicester, in which case you might not think so.

For the rest of us it is ‘a life-affirming true story’ and testimony to one woman’s courage and tenacity.

In essence the movie follows amateur historian Philippa Langley – superbly played by Sally Hawkins – and her obsession with discovering the remains of King Richard III which have been lost for over 500 years.

Her friends and family think she has lost the plot – and constant apparitions of Richard III reinforce this. However her friendship and support from the wonderfully eccentric local Ricardian Society group keeps her encouraged.

Along the way she has to deal with the scepticism of experts and academics as well as deal with the local bureaucracy – this is both History and Herstory.

It is a superb movie, well written, well acted, well watched with plenty of humour and pathos. The Lost King stars Sally Hawkins, Steve Coogan and Harry Lloyd.

It is Directed by Stephen Frears with the Screenplay by Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope.
