Building capability in teachers and support staff to use te reo Māori welcomed

NZEI Te Riu Roa has welcomed the roll-out of Te Ahu o te Reo Māori, a $12.2 million pilot programme to support teachers and support staff use te reo Māori.
NZEI Te Riu Roa President Lynda Stuart said NZEI was committed to universal access to te reo for all New Zealand chidlren, and the programme was a significant stepping stone to educators being able to make that goal become a reality.
Matua takawaenga Laures Park said improving levels of te reo in the existing education workforce was a strategy long advocated by NZEI Te Riu Roa.
“This is obviously only a first step, but it is an important and welcome signal of the Government’s commitment to Te Tiriti and to te reo me nga tikanga,” she said.
