Sixteen years after the band first set sail, Wellington’s favourite drunken sailors return to play another of their legendary Paekākāariki gigs.
The Raskolnikovs are becoming veterans of the Wellington music scene Despite announcing their ‘final gig’ at least three times, the band’s high-energy folk/punk/polka music continues to fill dance floors in small bars and old halls.
The band expanded a few years back, adding trumpet and trombone to their line up of guitar, bass, drums, accordion and violin. The band features members of many current and former Wellington bands including Eb and Sparrow, The Golden Awesome, The Wrongdoings, Cavalier and Bremworth, Knife Fight, The Users, Eurorash, Sheitgeist and screeds of others.
The difficulty of slotting The Raskolnikovs into any particular genre has lead to descriptions including “rock ‘n’ stomp gypsy punks”, “drunken Russian polka-rock”,”a cross between some kind of Eastern European music and The Munsters” or, more simply “The best Wellington band ever”.
Popular local band The Travesties are playing support, offering their distinctive ‘Paekākāariki Dunedin sound’ existentialist rock.
