More Kiwis staying at home this summer and spending less on Christmas gifts

A snap poll undertaken by 50+ lifestyle website and social club GrownUps.co.nz suggests more Kiwis will be staying close to home these holidays. 62% of poll participants said they’d be staying at home and 28% said they would be staying within a two-hour drive of home this summer.
A whopping 79% said they hadn’t finished their Christmas shopping yet and most were planning to shop for presents right up until Christmas.
Christmas spending was expected to be relatively restrained by the majority of those polled. 54% were planning to spend $100-500 on Christmas presents. Just over 20% expected to spend between $500-1000 in total. Respondents said shopping for children or grandchildren would take up the biggest part of that budget. 38.2% are planning to spend an average $50 per child or grandchild. 33% expected to spend less than that at $30 per child or grandchild and 29% expected to spend $100 or more per child.
Practical gifts for grandchildren like books, vouchers and swimming lessons are at the top of the Christmas shopping list. Bonus bonds were also surprisingly included on that list. Clothes were next priority, with toys coming in at lower priority.
Although traditionally Christmas was the one time of the year families travelled to be together to celebrate the day, the GrownUps.co.nz snap poll indicated many Kiwi’s will celebrate Christmas with friends as well as family this year.
The poll was conducted over a 24 hour period with 773 participants.
