New Zealand’s leading piano trio will open the 2011 series of Mulled Wine Concerts in Paekākāariki on Sunday 27 March.
The NZTrio, which has won critical acclaim throughout New Zealand and overseas is led by multi-award winning Justine Cormack (violin), former Concertmaster of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and member of the NZSO and features Ashley Brown (cello), a former winner of the TVNZ Young Musician’s Competition and Sarah Watkins (piano) a graduate from the famous Juilliard School in New York City.
The NZTrio formed in 2002 and was Ensemble in Residence at Auckland University between 2004 and 2009. Recent highlights of their performing career include appearances at the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai, concerts in Beijing and Taiwan, a Celebrity Series Tour for Chamber Music New Zealand and a special concert at the Aurora Festival in Sydney, broadcast live on ABC.
Their programme for Paekākāariki will include works by Haydn and Tchaikovsky. The NZTrio’s aim is to juxtapose traditional classical works with more modern pieces and they are sure to offer an exhilarating performance!
The Mulled Wine concert series is organised by Mary Gow, herself a resident of Paekākāariki and the 2011 series will cover five concerts. Each takes place in the Paekākāariki Memorial Hall which offers a fabulous seaside location with splendid views of Kāpiti Island, the coast southwards towards Mana and the South Island. The acoustics of the wood-panelled building are ideal for the intimacy of chamber music. To heighten the audience experience and in line with the idea that this type of music was designed for people to enjoy in a home setting, the organisers have taken to inviting a series of local artists to decorate the walls of the Hall with vibrant artworks and sculpture.
