Kāpiti Enviroschools will again be out in force at the Sustainable Home and Garden Show during the weekend of 26 and 27 March. They will join the village of tents, gazebos and yurts on the Kāpiti Primary School field.
Inside, a gallery will display local students’ learning and work for sustainability in both their schools and preschools, and their communities. You can also collect information about the Enviroschools Programme and schools can purchase Enviroschools Handbooks and scrapbooks.
Come and join in the great range of activities on offer over the 2 days, and purchase something from the school stalls. Here’s the line-up:
Raumati South Kindergarten 9-11am on Saturday: bird feeders, homemade dog biscuits and ‘worm wees’ for sale, bamboo habitats for ladybirds and wetas, insect apartments and rain barrel painting;
Little Earth Montessori Preschool 11am-1pm on Saturday: paper and card making (including pressed flowers), bird biscuits and seeds for sale;
Kapanui School 1-4pm on Saturday: pricking out and potting on seedlings, worm juice and seedlings for sale;
Paraparaumu Playcentre 10am-12noon on Sunday: make lavender sachets, and buy potting seeds and worm juice. Check out their eco-building plans!
Ōtaki School 12noon-3pm on Sunday: Web of Life activity (beat the clock!), display with tea bag garden, grass seed pantyhose people, sock puppets.
Ngahina Kindergarten will be present for the whole weekend in two of their own gazebos, selling high-quality second-hand and recycled clothing for children and adults.
Raumati South School are entering the ‘Resourceful Living and Landscape Design’ competition, creating a sustainable, water-conserving garden from scratch. It will feature an African ‘keyhole’ garden, bug habitats, painted rainwater barrels, and New Zealand natives, and more. Join them in painting the last rainwater barrel.
On a site nearby, the Year 12 Technology class from Kāpiti College will display a scale-model of the ‘eco-hut’ they are creating for a former student who is recovering from cancer. This is a CanTeen fundraiser, so please drop a gold coin or two into their bucket. Year 9 students will also be there, erecting a tiered garden with decorative sculpted figures as their garden competition entry.
At another stall, Hannah Zwartz, KCDC’s new Green Gardener, will be making a glasshouse out of plastic bottles! (With thanks to Paekākāariki School children for their help). She will also present different styles of worm farms, explain her bio-digester for bad weeds, and hold workshops on herbs.
Something sustainable for everyone!
