Ōtaki MP and Associate Transport Minister Nathan Guy has officially launched the new Matangi trains in Wellington today.
“This train is the first of 48 new two-car electric units, with the entire new fleet expected to be here towards the end of next year.
“The Matangi trains cost $235 million, with 90% coming from central government. This is part of a huge investment being made by the government and the Greater Wellington Regional Council in Wellington’s rail network.
“They feature the latest technology with air-conditioning, public address systems, wheelchair access and electronic display screens. They can also carry 30 more standing passengers than the current model.
“This is great news for rail commuters and very timely with the Rugby World Cup next year when we expect thousands of visitors.
“Passengers have had to put up with decades of neglect on our rail network. Fortunately that is changing and the arrival of the Matangi is very positive news after a winter that has caused commuters some frustration.”
Mr Guy said a further $276 million is being invested in overhauling the electrified network to prepare for the new trains and improve overall reliability. As part of this, electrification and double tracking is being extended on the Kāpiti Line all the way to Waikanae, which will mean more services and greater reliability.
“The Matangi trains will be introduced on the Wellington network from December, and will be in action on the Paraparaumu line around the middle of next year.”
