Kāpiti Councillor Tony Jack’s Notice of Motion to remove the Macron from Council papers at the KCDC meeting on Thursday was defeated.
The formal motion read: That Kāpiti Coast District Council determines to refrain from the use of a Macron in any spelling of the words Kāpiti, Ōtaki or Paekākāariki in any Council papers, publications, maps or signage immediately.
Cr Jack, from Waikanae, said his motion was a response to the people who have wide concerns in the community.
However the vote went for the Macron with all councillors voting to retain it except for Cr Jack and Cr Ellis. Cr David Scott abstained.
Cr Jack said the process had been handled appallingly and had been driven by Te Whakaminenga with no debate.
“There was no intention to offend with this, I felt it needed to be justified. I’m not convinced it was. Some of the reasons given were weak but that’s the way the vote went.”
