I would like to introduce myself as the Community Health Engagement Coordinator for the Kāpiti Community Health Group (KCHG).

I would like to introduce myself as the Community Health Engagement Coordinator for the Kāpiti Community Health Group (KCHG). My responsibility is to provide opportunity for the Ōtaki, Waikanae, Paraparaumu and Raumati/Paekākāariki communities to voice their views and concerns, to provide them with health information and to improve/increase their access to health services.

Background
The KCHG was established in 1998 and exists to promote and foster communication and liaison between community and welfare organisations and individuals in the development of community health and disability services in the Kāpiti District. Its primary aim is to increase or improve health and disability services to the Kāpiti District especially for Maori and low income people. The KCHG presently comprises 9 elected community trustees as well as 3 staff, and the office is based in the Kāpiti Health Centre.

Relationships

  • The KCHG holds a Memorandum of Understanding establishing a formal partnership with the
    Capital & Coast District Health Board (CCDHB). The KCHG also holds a contract with the CCDHB to monitor the quality of its services and to provide strategic advice.

  • The KCHG has a history of partnership with the Kāpiti Coast District Council and holds a
    service agreement with the KCDC to provide operational support to facilitate achievement of the recommendations of the KCDC Health and Disability Report and Action Plan 2000 and the review of this document undertaken in 2008.

  • The KCHG holds a Memorandum of Understanding establishing a formal partnership with the
    Kāpiti PHO and is also responsible for the election of Kāpiti PHO community representatives (2).

  • The KCHG holds a Memorandum of Understanding establishing a formal partnership with the
    Ōtaki PHO.

    1. ADVOCACY
    To advocate publicly funded health and disability services that work fairly for everyone

    2. IMPROVING HEALTH OUTCOMES
    To work with health and other sectors to achieve policies that improve health and wellbeing and reduce disparities, especially for Maori

    3. PROVISION AND ACCESS TO SERVICES
    To promote the provision, accessibility and equitability of health and disability services appropriate to the needs of communities

    4. INFORMATION
    To promote the provision of and access to information on health and disability services

    5. HEALTH AND WELLBEING PROMOTION
    To promote health and wellbeing that encourages the community to live healthy lifestyles

    Looking Ahead
    Some of KCHG’s current projects include:

  • Review of the KCHG Trust Deed

  • Updating of the existing Cross Boundary Agreement for the people of Ōtaki and Te Horo

  • Office relocation to the front of the Kāpiti Health Centre for improved accessibility

  • Increase community engagement

  • Develop Strategic Plan 2010-2013

  • Increase free access to health websites in community locations

  • Ensure all Kāpiti residents have access to a GP
